Thin Slices of Interaction : Predicting users
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report on an exploratory study where the first 60 seconds of the video recording of a user interaction are used to predict the user’s experienced task difficulty. This approach builds on previous work on “thin slices” of human-human behavior, and applies it to humancomputer interaction. In the scenario of interacting with a photocopy machine, automated video coding showed that the Activity and Emphasis predicted 46.6% of the variance of task difficulty. This result closely follows reported results on predicting negotiation outcomes from conversational dynamics using similar variables on the speech signal.

Predicting Extraversion from Non-verbal Features During a Face-to-Face Human-Robot Interaction
In this paper we present a system for automatic prediction of extraversion during the first thin slices of human-robot interaction (HRI). This work is based on the hypothesis that personality traits and attitude towards robot appear in the behavioural response of humans during HRI. We propose a set of four non-verbal movement features that characterize human behavior during interaction. We focu...
متن کاملReliability and validity of nonverbal thin slices in social interactions.
Four studies investigated the reliability and validity of thin slices of nonverbal behavior from social interactions including (a) how well individual slices of a given behavior predict other slices in the same interaction; (b) how well a slice of a given behavior represents the entirety of that behavior within an interaction; (c) how long a slice is necessary to sufficiently represent the enti...
متن کاملExperimental study and mathematical modeling of thin layer drying of rhubarb (Rheum ribes L.)
In this study rhubarb stem slices were dried as single layers with thickness of 3 mm in the inlet air temperature range of 50-70 and air velocity of 1 ± 0.2 m/s in a laboratory scale cabinet dryer. The effect of drying air temperature on the drying characteristics was determined and the relationship between the drying parameters with temperature and moisture content was examined. Moisture tran...
متن کاملThin Slices of Online Profile Attributes
People form consistent impressions of others given surprisingly little information. With the advent of social networks, impressions now may form online rather than in a face-to-face context. This research explores aspects of online impression formation and discusses the crucial role of user profiles in this process. By examining users’ decisions in an experimentally controlled social network, w...
متن کاملThin slices of negotiation: predicting outcomes from conversational dynamics within the first 5 minutes.
In this research the authors examined whether conversational dynamics occurring within the first 5 minutes of a negotiation can predict negotiated outcomes. In a simulated employment negotiation, microcoding conducted by a computer showed that activity level, conversational engagement, prosodic emphasis, and vocal mirroring predicted 30% of the variance in individual outcomes. The conversationa...
